This week my painting of Birgit Cunningham, which I blogged about last August and only finished last week (thats normal by the way, my paintings are a personal test of endurance!), was given a good old mention in The Daily Mail newspaper.
When Birgit told me the news that it was to be written about by Richard Kay she said "I don't know how you feel about the Daily Mail but they've been pretty rotten to me in the past. Richard is the only one who's ever shown me any kind of support".
I have to admit, I am far from a fan of the Daily Mail's politics, but I have no qualms about being featured in it! There is not much point in only ever preaching to the converted, to people who will just agree with you as not much gets changed that way. So if I can be featured in a paper who's readers probably wont agree with my politics then all the better!
I think the Daily Mail can probably be quite scathing about women and scandal, especially when that scandal combines sex and politicians, so although my painting wasn't created to outright support Birgit's fling with Lord Strathclyde, it was partly created to question how women and scandal are still so flammatory in todays society.
I do wish they'd included an image of the painting in the feature but alas the journalist didn't manage to make contact with me in time for permission before it went to print.
So here is an image of the painting:
Here is the article from the paper:
